To be exact, a Batch file is a coded set of instructions written in the Batch format. First introduced with MS-DOS in 1980, the language has gone through many changes throughout its history; though most of these changes have been small, such as added commands so its concept has remained relatively the same. These files have to be launched in a command-line interpreter, usually Command Prompt (called MS-DOS prompt in DOS-based versions of Windows). Batch is often regarded as a great entry-level programming language due to its relative ease of use and similarity to other programming languages such as BASIC.
